The true seals (Phocidae) are a family of carnivorous marine mammals within the pinniped group. The Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) is named after James Weddell, the explorer of the Weddell Sea. It is widely distributed along the Antarctic coast, with an estimated population of about 0.8 million individuals. It can reach up to 3.5 meters in length and weigh up to 550 kg. It is capable of staying underwater for up to 60 minutes and diving to depths of up to 800 meters. It feeds on fish and cephalopods. In winter, Weddell seals gnaw breathing holes in the ice and maintain them as the ice refreezes, which often leads to severe wear of the teeth in older individuals.
